Properties and Uses of Zinc Chloride


Characteristics: white granular, rod-shaped or powdery, odorless, hygroscopic, with a solubility in water of 432g at 25°C and 614g at 100°C.

Properties: White granular, rod-shaped or powder, odorless, hygroscopic, solubility in water at 25°C is 432g, at 100°C is 614g. 1g dissolves in 0.25ml of 2% hydrochloric acid, 1.3ml of ethanol, 2ml of glycerol, easily soluble in acetone, reacts with excess water to produce zinc oxychloride, its aqueous solution is acidic to litmus, with a pH of about 4, relative density of 2.907, melting point of about 290°C, boiling point of 732°C, toxic, median lethal dose (rats, intravenous) 60-90mg/kg, corrosive.

Uses: Testing for secondary alcohols, dehydrating agent in organic synthesis, catalyst, condensing agent.
Safety measures:
Store in a cool, dry place, away from ignition sources and heat. Store separately from oxidizers, food chemicals, etc. Pay attention to personal protection, direct contact with the body is strictly prohibited. In case of skin (eye) contact, rinse with flowing water.
